There was a post going around a couple years ago saying that same point, and more or less saying "Yeah I think all thats actually happening is that every person has a certain amount of social interaction where when you get less than that you start to get really wierd, and another seperate level of social interaction where if you start to go over that you start to get really weird, and the values for both of those are different for everyone." and like, it is useful to have terms to describe being higher or lower than that than the average, and i think "introvert" and "extrovert" are good choices of label to describe that, but also like... people do very much vastly dramaticize those labels.

Yeah! Part of the reason why I posted this was because I was just thinking about that post, and I remembered that the notes of it were full of people trying to "explain" to the OP that actually no, there *is* a way in which introverts and extroverts *are* inherently different from each other, and then just repeating the "introverts gain energy from alone time and extroverts gain energy from socializing" thing, and then I started thinking about how weird it is that people keep repeating that explanation as if it's a verifiable or even self-evident fact even though, as far as I can tell, it seems to be a conjecture based on absolutely no demonstrable evidence.

mbti is in general completely unsupported by any empirical evidence & was invented by non-trained fiction writers attempting to popularise jungian psych principles -- not that credentialling would have made this endeavour any more credible. merve emre's book goes into some detail on this specific history. there's also a lot more historical literature on the development of personality testing/typing and its adoption into the workplace: spoiler, none of it is scientifically validated or useful and it's a great way for companies to do racism & classism & make insane affective demands of their workers.

I don’t know if MBTI has anything to do with those definitions of introversion and extroversion. They feel more related to Hans Eysenck’s work (and a looooot of his work has been discredited)
